Summer Update from Middlebury Men’s Tennis

We hope this message finds everyone enjoying their summers and since we are already anticipating and preparing for the arrival of our squad back on campus this fall, we figured what better time than now to update Panther Tennis Nation about some new updates and what we are following and working on.

Summer Successes on and off the Court

At the risk of only highlighting a few of our players, here are a few assorted and fun summer successes from three of our Panthers! The first is Sidney Huet, who had a unique opportunity to travel to South Africa and to literally do hard volunteer work helping take care of lions and other animals. At Middlebury we take care of our cats!  Next up is Noah Lewis, who won a summer series ITA hosted by Navy! So many of our guys are competing hard this summer which is such a key to coming back to campus prepared and ready to rumble! Finally, we would be remiss if we did not provide a shout out to Thehan Wijemanne for his performance at Davis Cup competing for Sri Lanka and leading his team to promotion! Thehan beat one opponent who was ATP ranked along the way too! So many in our group are doing well, and fun to follow along with how productive these guys are.

Academic Awards

Still celebrating our team’s successes from last year we have to shout out our team GPA of 3.79! Next level stuff and 11 of 12 players earning the ITA All-Academic award! Great stuff!

New Athletic Director

A new era in Middlebury Athletics has commenced this summer with Erin Quinn officially retiring at the end of June. Read all about his era and retirement announcement here.

Looking toward the future, we are thrilled to welcome our new athletic director Todd Phelps! We look forward to collaborating with him to keep building on the history of tennis at Middlebury! To get to know him more you can read more about him here and watch a video here.

Preparing for Upcoming Season (Fall Schedule Out)

We are amped to be able to host two of our three fall tournaments this year! We kick of the year as we always do with the classic Middlebury Invite (September 12th and 13th) and then follow that by hosting the New England Fall ITA Regional this year (September 25-27th)! Last up we will travel to Skidmore who will host some great d3 competition from around the country. We are fortunate to have amazing facilities to support running a great event and can’t wait.

Panthers Finish 14-5: Senior Weekend and NESCAC Tournament

As we headed toward the end of our regular season and into postseason play, we sought to rise through the finish line… an annual trademark of Midd Tennis! Senior and alumni weekend was a huge hit as we returned an amazing crew of alumni to campus, as well as brought in many family members to help us celebrate our seniors in style! On the courts, we despite two close losses we demonstrated some excellent improvements and showed that we had grown through the year! Unfortunately, the NCAA did not see fit to give us an at large bid with only two conference teams earning entry to the event. Without a doubt, we will use this as clear and strong motivation and fire to improve and already cannot wait to hit the ground running next year as a team. This year, we have senior captain Julian Wu leading the charge for us at NCAA individuals which will take place starting May 23rd at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, TN! Below are the highlights from our final four dual matches and some photos of our alumni and senior celebrations! 

Colby (Midd wins 7-0)

Heading into this match on senior day, due to injury and some needed tweaking, we changed all three of our doubles pairs and this resulted in an impressive sweep in front of an electric alumni and fans crowd at our home courts! The boys carried this momentum into singles play and won all six singles positions in straight sets against a talented team which was no easy task! This was a great team performance and a fun way to lead into our senior celebration dinner later that evening.

Bowdoin (Midd loses 3-4)

Next up was a fun challenge taking on Bowdoin. We came out swinging out of the gates and again swept all three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point including winning a 7-6 (8) tiebreaker at the number one doubles spot. Heading into singles play, Bowdoin took some moment, but we fought tooth and nail and unfortunately came up just short. We ended up winning both at #1 singles (Julian Wu) in straight sets and at #6 singles (Andy Yim) in a third set super tiebreaker.

Wesleyan (Midd wins 4-3)

Gearing up for a postseason run is always a fun and motivating time and we knew we would have to bring our best tennis from the beginning of the tournament facing a tough Wesleyan team on their home courts in the opening round. We came out on the wrong end of a very hard fought doubles point winning at #3 doubles but then dropping 7-5 and 7-6 sets at the other two spots. Knowing we would have to lock in, our squad did just that. We secured three straight set victories (Thehan, Hugh, and Andy) to set up one of our senior leaders Julian Wu to do his thing. Staying cool and collected, he kept applying pressure to his opponent steadily until he secured a 7-5, 7-6 victory sending us to the semifinals to rematch Bowdoin who we played just six days earlier. Bowdoin (Midd loses 2-4)

Excited and ready to take on Bowdoin after a close loss to them less than a week ago, we came out with our hair on fire and determined to flip the script. We won the doubles point again, with excellent performances at the top two doubles flights and then went out for 4 courts of singles play as the match had been pushed indoors due to weather. We then took a great next step with Andy Yim playing a stretch of nearly flawless tennis on route to a straight set win pushing our lead to 2-0. On the other three initial courts, we found ourselves in a third set on all of them! Unfortunately, we were not able to close the door on these matches and lost all three hard fought battles which allowed Bowdoin to regain the momentum and eventually the match. This turned out to be our final dual match of the season as we likely just missed out on an at-large berth for NCAAs. The disappointment stung, but we already have been using that motivation to fuel us for the future!

Upcoming: NCAA Individuals

Although our team run has come to a end, Julian Wu earned a selection to NCAA individuals which will begin on Sat, May 23 in Chattanooga, TN! We are training hard and excited to watch him shine after a fantastic season for him at our top spot all year long. In the latest national rankings, Juju is coming in at #10 in the nation and Thehan/Reif earned some respect currently at #22 in the nation in doubles! Panthers (12-3): Adapting and Rising Through the Season

After an incredibly hot start and a 9-0 run to begin our year, our team is now even more battle-tested after a few more weeks of play! Two of our losses came from dropping hard fought matches to teams ranked #1 and #2 in the nation, and a handful of setbacks allowed us to reflect and tweak in areas where we needed to grow! Our past two matches from this past weekend demonstrated incredible resilience where our team made a particularly impressive comeback after falling behind 3-0 to Amherst and finishing the match reeling off four three set wins in a row to clinch a 4-3 decision followed by another road win at Hamilton the next day! We look forward to using these lessons learned and hitting our stride as we have only one weekend of home matches followed by postseason play!

We also want to highlight and remind our alumni that our alumni weekend matches will take place on April 27-28. We cannot wait to see many of you there! The plan for our alumni hit is to play on Saturday from 930-11am (outdoors weather permitting or in Nelson Arena as needed). CMS (Midd lost 5-2)

For our final spring break match, we faced off against the top ranked team in the nation. We lost a brutally close doubles point and had a point to clinch it. After losing some team momentum after the doubles and falling behind early in the singles play, we did fight back hard and were able to earn two matches in third set ten-point tiebreakers at #2 singles (Lewis) and #6 singles (Sahasrabudhe). This tough test was a fun experience regardless of result, and was a first step toward recognizing areas we needed to address on the practice courts.

Williams (Midd lost 6-1)

In this home match vs Williams, we again dropped a very hard-fought doubles point that came down to a tiebreaker at # 2 doubles. Credit to the other team for sneaking past us, we again were unable to halt momentum heading into singles play. This is an area we emphasized and knew we would be more prepared for in the future! In singles play, we did not have our best day across the board, but Reif Larsen was a great highlight earning a wonderful straight set win at #4 singles!

Trinity CT (Midd wins 6-`1)

Hungry to get back in the win column, we bounced back in style on the road where we competed will in windy day conditions at Trinity (CT). The doubles was played at a high level and coming through on the double point allowed us to have a turn and carrying momentum into singles, which we were able to thrive on! We won four straight set singles wins and one more in a ten-point tiebreaker build some needed confidence and put a firm grip on a conference win!

Tufts (Midd lost 7-0)

Gearing up for a very tough test against the #2 ranked team in the country, we came out strongly on the doubles court and went up breaks at #2 and #3 doubles. Unfortunately, we could not hang on to our leads and dropped the doubles point. Again facing momentum heading the wrong direction, credit to Tufts for playing some very high-level singles early across the board and it made our job tough to hang in. Although we were unable to secure back the momentum, our team atmosphere and composure began to improve, and we knew this setback would only serve to make us more hungry and more willing to dig even deeper in our next matches.

Amherst (Midd wins 4-3)

In our first 4-3 decision of the year, it was an epic comeback for the ages! After dropping the doubles point and four out of 6 singles sets, we had little margin for error. That being said, our group demonstrated incredible belief and resilience in themselves and each other! We had been down in a couple of recent matches, and we knew only playing free and bringing big energy and passion would give us a shot to completing the comeback. The comeback party got started by Thehan Wijemanne at #3 singles who earned a 6-2 win in his third set, who was then quickly followed by three of his teammates. Anand Sahasrabudhe won at #6 singles next also 6-2 in the third followed by Hugh Hentschel at #5 singles who won 6-1 in the third. The match then came down to the final court at #1 singles, where Julian Wu played with an impressive sense of calm composure and through some very high-level points found his way to clinch the team match 6-2 in his third set! Shout out to all 12 of our players from bringing incredible intensity and passion in this one!

Hamilton (Midd wins 7-0)

Not slowing our team momentum following a big win the day before, our Panthers pounced again after moving indoors for an away match at Hamilton. We secured the doubles point and fun to have inserted Nathan Hernandez who paired with Thehan Wijemanne to win at #1 doubles and Nikky Kondamuri who paired with Julian Wu at #3 doubles! We never looked back, and ended up clinching the match at #5 singles with a win from Andy Yim!

The 2026 Panthers Win 9 Consecutive Out of the Gate!

We have quickly gotten off to an impressive start, winning 9 consecutive matches (8 road wins and 1 neutral site win) to kick off the year! Our longest streak to begin the season since the spring of 2013 if our research was correct. In accomplishing this feat we began with a road slate of matches in the northeast, before adjusting to some SoCal heat on our spring break trip!

Our triumphs included wins over many nationally ranked teams including RPI (#20), Wesleyan (#23), Pomona-Pitzer (#17), and Redlands (#25). Across these matches, we have seen both our upperclassmen leading the charge, and our freshmen and sophomores earning key victories to set us up for success. Clearly, a core strength of our squad this year is our togetherness and ability to win matches from any position across our lineup! Here’s a review of our matches and a highlight of what is ahead!

RPI (Midd wins 7-0)

Kicking off our season with a ranked opponent on the road, the doubles was intensely contested in this one. We secured three very hard-fought doubles wins at all three positions, two in tiebreakers. After that, we never looked back winning all six singles matches in straight sets.

Conn (Midd wins 7-0)

Beginning our NESCAC conference play, we cruised in this one and brought great team energy and focus throughout. In particular we showed off some excellent team depth and improved doubles play.

Wesleyan (Midd wins 5-2)

In a match that was anything but easy, Wesleyan fought us from start to finish. We dropped the doubles point losing a tiebreaker at the top slot, but our resilience was highlighted in this match as we displayed a toughness and grittiness to come out strong in singles even though we did not have the doubles momentum. Highlight goes to Thehan at #3 singles who secured the clinch in this match in what would become a theme for him!

Bates (Midd wins 5-2)

To secure our fourth match of the year, we knew it would be a dog fight as Bates is always a tricky match to play on the road. We began with an impressive doubles performance finding our way to clinching the doubles point with wins at #1 and #3 doubles. In singles play, the biggest key was winning all three matches that went to third sets at #1, #3 and #6 singles! Again, Thehan was the guy who earned the clinch before teammate Anand could beat him to it!

Chapman (Midd wins 7-0)

After a few travel delays, our team was thrilled to have made it to SoCal to kick off our first of six matches on the trip. Despite not being able to train the day before, our group did not blink and adjusted the conditions quickly to earn the doubles point, which gave us confidence to follow with six well-earned straight set singles wins.

Linfield (Midd wins 7-0)

Taking on a double header on our first day of competition, our group remained locked in from start to finish again highlighting our fortitude and depth. Fun to play a squad from the Pacific Northwest who we had not played before.

Whittier (Midd wins 7-0)

In what became a theme, our group again was building on our momentum and rising confidence taking it to the Poets. All four of our freshmen earned straight set singles wins in this one! Another cool fact was that new Whittier assistant coach Ernesto Escobedo, a veteran ATP player with a career high ranking of 67 in the world, was warming up on the courts next to us!

Pomona (Midd wins 5-2)

Avenging our loss to Pomona last year, we came out determined to fight and battle in this one. Reif and Thehan secured the doubles point in tiebreak fashion following a solid 6-3 performance from Hugh and Andy! In singles play, Juju took out another one of the highest ranked players in d3. Set up by an earlier win from Hugh, Thehan again found his way to clinching the team win yet again! Shout out to both Reif and Anand who both played all the way to a full third set tiebreaker, with the match ending with a win by Anand!

Redlands (Midd wins 6-1)

In arguably our most complete performance of the season, our squad posted a really impressive result versus Redlands. This time it was Andy and Hugh clinching the doubles point. In attempt to build on this momentum more than we were able to the previous day, we got off to quicker starts in singles and never looked back earning five straight set victories, with the clinching win coming from Noah!

Our 2026 Expedition Begins Soon!

As our spring season nears day by day, we can feel the extra enthusiasm and excitement we are channeling into our preparation and training. Our first dual match of the spring begins with a road match versus RPI on Feb 28th! Each year we always graduate amazing talent and leaders, but a beautiful part of college sports is that this turnover creates openings and opportunities for our other Panthers to step up and expand their own contributions! In this blog post we spotlight our freshmen class, share our Spring 2026 schedule, and share our latest facilities upgrades!

This development season, our veteran captains have done an amazing job organizing our training and it is a pleasure seeing our group take ownership over their development, emphasizing both off-court training and also taking advantage of external opportunities to compete both domestically and abroad too! We also are thrilled to be welcoming back two of our juniors, Thehan Wijemanne and Nikky Kondamuri who studied abroad in Australia and Denmark respectively.

Alumni Match Weekend and Senior Celebration (April 25th and 26th)

Alumni match weekend will take place April 25-26, when we host Colby on Saturday and Bowdoin on Sunday. We will plan to host a get together with both our seniors, team members, families, and alumni this weekend! We will plan to have an alumni hit the morning of April 25th!

Recapping ITAs and Skidmore Open and Introducing New Asst Coach!

The past two weeks have been filled with competition and the clear reminder of how special it is to travel together as a team on road trips. The competitiveness in our unit this year is well balanced with maximum humor as we tested ourselves against some of the best competition that DIII has to offer over the past two events. At the ITA New England regional competitors included the all the best players from our region and at the Skidmore Open we faced off against some of the top regional teams as well as Denison and Swarthmore which was fun to compete against some opponents we do not get to see as often. Not only did we leave these events with quite a bit of success, but we also more importantly clarified what we need to work on and where we need to go to keep rising!

We are thrilled to highlight and announce the newest member of our squad, our Assistant Coach Jake Cohen. We are fortunate to bring in an accomplished former NESCAC player (multiple time All-NESCAC accolades) who immediately has fit in seamlessly with our team. Jake's kind and upbeat approach and willingness to be a sparring partner have already been a huge asset and look forward to having our coaching staff back in full force.

ITA New England Regional Highlights

• We earned two spots in the Rd of 16 in singles across Julian Wu and Reif Larsen who both secured excellent three-set wins. 

• Reif continued his winning ways winning another three-set battle to book a ticket to the quarterfinals. Reif’s run demonstrated what all of his coaches and teammates see, excellent development and improvement!

• We had two doubles teams make it to the Rd of 16 (Wu/Lewis) and (Larsen/Hernandez), and all four of our doubles teams in the draw earned at least one win!

Skidmore Open Highlights

• We won 3 of the 8 flights across the entire tournament, with a bundle of excellent wins throughout.

• In the D doubles draw Nathan Jackson and Justin Zhou paired up to win three consecutive matches including a convincing 6-1 scoreline in the final!

• In the A doubles draw, Noah Lewis and Julian Wu played some particularly impressive tennis including finding themselves a 6-1 winner in the final round as well against a team that has been ranked as high as #2 in the nation!

• In the B doubles draw, Nathan Hernandez and Reif Larsen earned a trip to the semifinals and came up just short against the team that went on to win the draw.

• In the D singles draw, Justin Zhou went on a nice run earning two solid victories and making it to the semifinal round.

• In the C singles draw, both Nathan Jackson and Hugh Hentschel won three-set battles to get to the quarterfinal round.

• In the B singles draw, Reif Larsen played some impressive tennis en route to the consolations finals earning two key wins and only falling in a three-set war. Fell panther, Anand Sahasrabudhe also earned an impressive win the B flight before falling in his own three-set battle.

• In the A singles flight, Julian Wu won the whole thing including taking out two ITA regional winners in consecutive rounds in the semifinals and finals, while fellow A draw competitor Noah Lewis won an awesome three-set match before falling to the eventual finalist!

Our group will continue to train for a bit more this fall, play an intrasquad tournament, and build on our momentum as we head into our developmental season!

Recapping Our 2025 Middlebury Invitational

Our Middlebury Invitational was a great way to begin our year! We had beautiful weather all weekend and loved hosting a fall tournament for the first time at our new facility! Across the five total flights (3 singles draws and 2 doubles draws), we captured three titles. Additionally indicating our impressive depth was that all ten of our competitors in this event posted a win! A solid showing all around, and certainly still a lot to learn and grow from in the moments we did not execute as well as we are capable. We maintain and recognize that it is not how we start the year that means the most, but now we have increased clarity and determination to dial in our collective games to keep rising as we enjoy each step through the season!

Middlebury Invitational 2025 Summary

• Sophomore Sidney Huet and Freshman Nathan Hernandez brought wonderful competitive intensity and fire while capturing the B Flight Doubles crown! Their electric energy brought the whole team energy up. Sidney also had a nice run in B singles draw winning a match and losing only to the eventual champion in a super-tiebreaker.

• Senior Julian Wu and Junior Noah Lewis both played seven matches across two days, winning the A Flight Doubles Draw together and making each making a run to the semifinals of the A Flight Singles Draw. Their final doubles match was a thing of beauty to watch!

• Freshman Andy Yim won four consecutive singles matches to win the C Flight Singles crown and additionally posted a win with doubles partner Hugh Hentschel in A Flight Doubles.

• Freshman Justin Zhou and Senior Nathan Jackson won the B Flight Doubles Consolation bracket, with Justin winning a singles match in the C flight and Nathan making a run to the semifinals of the B flight.

• Sophomore Reif Larsen and Freshman Anand Sahasrabudhe won a round in A Flight Doubles, and Reif also captured a solid win in A Flight Singles before losing to the eventual flight champion.

Our 2025-2026 Journey Begins!

For us coaches, the beginning of the new school year is always one of the most exciting moments for our team. It is a chance to build on the depth and ingrained culture that has sustained Middlebury Men’s Tennis, but also a new opportunity to evolve and make our own imprint on the program and to define this year’s team identity. Over the summer, our team was incredibly productive both on and off the tennis courts. They completed internships and competed in tournaments both domestically and abroad too! Below are a few action snapshots from our summers.

This Fall, we will have two juniors who are studying abroad. Thehan is currently in Australia and Nikky is in Denmark! We miss them already, but it is fun staying connected with them to follow their adventures, keep them connected with our team, and of course to hear when they find club and tournament tennis they can play against international competition is awesome too!

The Panther roster for the 2025-2026 season is comprised of a balanced 6 upperclassmen and 6 underclassmen, with four incoming freshmen! Coach Andrew Thomson enters his 9th season back at Middlebury as a coach and we will have a new assistant coach who will be announced in the upcoming days. Special shout out to Tristan Kaye who has taken a new role at Brown University, thanks so much for all you did for the program and we will now be rooting for Brown too! The excitement we feel at the start of the season is hard to quantify, and we cannot wait to translate that energy into our training and efforts to pursue exploring our potential and looking to create another year with deep postseason runs! Let’s gooooo!
